There are different types of molecular structure formations depending on the number of covalent bonds. The VSEPR theory which also means valence shell electron pair repulsion theory is used to decide the geometrical structure of the given molecule. How is VSEPR theory used in Molecular Geometry? According to the VSEPR theory the number of valence electrons on the central atom decide the molecular structure of the compound. The central atom can either form bond pairs or lone pairs with its valence electrons. The bond pairs are formed when the central atom shares the electrons with another atom. The electronic configuration of Carbon is 1s2, 2s2, 2p2. The number of valence electrons of carbon is 4. As already shown in the table above Carbon has 4 bonding electrons and no lone pairs. The Carbon atom needs 4 more electrons to reach the stable state configuration. Hence it forms 4 covalent bonds. The Oxygen atom has the atomic number of 8. The electronic configuration of Oxygen atom is 1s2, 2s2, 2p4. The number of valence electrons for Oxygen is 6. As already shown in the table above Oxygen has 4 non-bonding electrons (2 lone pairs) and 2 bonding electrons. The Oxygen atoms needs two more electrons to reach the stable sate configuration. Hence it forms two covalent bonds. Using the VSEPR theory for Molecular Geometry, CO2 has linear shape. Central atom carbon forms double bonds with each Oxygen atom [C=O]. Due to the sharing of electrons Carbon and Oxygen now have 8 electrons in the outermost shell. As the molecular Structure for the Carbon di-oxide CO2 molecule is linear, it has an angle of 1800. Since the Oxygen atom has 2 lone pairs, it pulls the shared bond pair of electrons towards itself due to which there is an electronegativity generated in the carbon oxygen bond formation. This is the reason carbon oxygen double bond is polar covalent. However as there are two oxygen atoms on both sides they form symmetry due to which the CO2 molecule is non-polar.

Felicia: Cornell University is located in Ithaca, NYa great college town in western New York. Cornell is surrounded by a beautiful landscape. The campus is large, with different quads separating the different academic schools. It takes about 30 minutes to walk from one end of the campus to another. Since it is large, the Ithaca public bus system (TCAT) runs through campus. Students are able to take this bus off campus as well. Ithaca is a great college town, and there are a lot of fun activities to do on and off campus. There are great restaurants at the Commons, and the farmers market is really awesome. I do not have a car on campus and Im fine, but a lot of students bring their car after freshman year. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Felicia:Professors are very accessible and encourage students to go to their office hours to ask questions. This is great, because all the freshmen are geographically very close together. There are a number of different dorms, and each has their own set up. My freshman year I lived in a dorm that was all singles (fun fact: my dorm is the largest dorm of all the Ivy League schools). Other dorm set ups include doubles and triples. After freshman year, many students who decide to join Greek life live in their houses, which is really fun. Other options include living in dorms on West Campus. After sophomore year, students generally move off campus to Collegetown, a neighborhood right off of campus. Dining is great at Cornell. There are a lot of different options, and the food is really good. There are two dining halls on North campus as well as another food place that is open late. There are six dining halls on West campus. On Central campus, where classes are held, there is one dining hall as well as numerous cafes. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported at Cornell University? Felicia:I am an applied economics and management major, which is in The Charles H. Dyson School for Applied Economics and Management. It resides in the College for Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). I study undergraduate business, and I am concentrating in strategy. Students in The Dyson School can concentrate in 13 areas including finance, entrepreneurship, and international trade and finance. Felicia:Each college has its own career center. The CALS career center is very helpful in going over resumes, cover letters, and giving practice interviews. Top companies such as Goldman Sachs, EY, Deloitte, and Disney come to recruit. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Felicia:Cornell has three main libraries and many other smaller libraries across campus. Everyone has their favorite place to study because each one has a different vibe and different types of study spaces. I have never had a problem getting a seat; the only time when its tricky is during finals. The student union center is called Willard Straight Hall, and it has numerous resources available for students. Willard Straight houses Cornell Cinema, Slope Studio (an art center), cafes, and study spaces. Describe the surrounding town. Felicia:Ithaca is a great college town with a lot to do off campus. Right off campus is the neighborhood Collegetown, where many upperclassmen live. There are many restaurants and bars within walking distance from students apartments. Felicia:Cornell is about 5,000 undergrads per class. I like the size because there are always opportunities to meet new people. There are many ways to make Cornell feel smaller, such as joining Greek life or being close with kids in your major. Generally, classes are big (especially introductory classes), but small classes are not hard to find. I like both environments; even if it is a big class, there are still opportunities to get help. Felicia:The highlight so far of my undergraduate career was having the opportunity to participate in the class Global Business Trip: South Africa. Por esse motivo, os professores da LOI English não são apenas dos Estados Unidos.Dianna Henshaw é um exemplo disso, a professora é da Nova Zelândia, país que tem uma diferença horária enorme em relação ao Brasil quando em Brasília são 8h, lá são 23h. Ela comentou que, por causa disso, muitos dos seus alunos brasileiros acham que as horas que tem disponíveis, por vezes, são um pouco malucas.Segundo Dianna, a maior parte dos seus alunos são da Rússia e do Brasil, sendo que os brasileiros costumam ser dos estados de São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro. Ela ainda fez questão de frisar que se sente verdadeiramente confortável falando com brasileiros, que, na sua opinião, possuem um sentido de humor singular.Falando nisso, Dianna contou que o seu método preferido de ensinar é através do h umor, usando situações cômicas e formas caricatas de ver os erros, de maneira a que o aluno entenda onde está errando, mas que não se sinta constrangido por isso. A professora acredita que dar aulas através do Skype é uma forma de partilhar experiências e construir uma relação de confiança com o aluno, que permita que ele fale abertamente dos seus medos, objetivos e frustrações em relação à língua. Are You Thinking about Taking the New August SAT If youre a high school student, the parent of a high school student, or otherwise plugged into the world of standardized testing, youve probably heard about the new August SAT that will be administered this year. Bowing to popular demand, the College Board has finally decided to give students the option of taking the SAT over the summer. The total number of SAT dates each year will stay the same, though starting in 2018 there will no longer be a January SAT date.The official August SAT date will be August 26, 2017. The registration deadline for this test is July 28. You can register for the August SAT at the College Boards website. Please note that its probably a good idea to go ahead and register for this test right now if youre considering taking it. Many students, especially in the competitive Bay Area, are interested in trying the new August SAT, and due to the summer testing date, fewer testing sites will be available.This issue of limited space appears to be especially acute f or test-takers with accommodations for learning differences. Many of those testing spots across the Bay Area are already full. If you have accommodations for the SAT and you havent registered for the August test yet, do so immediately (or plan on driving a ways to find an open testing site).Now, onto the question weve been getting from many AJ Tutoring students and parents should I take the August SAT? A few thoughts:What year are you in high school?If youre a rising senior, the August SAT might be a great option for you. Many rising seniors have already taken the SAT at least once during the spring of their junior year. The August SAT is a great time for a retake, since for most students it comes before the beginning of the school year (and fall of senior year tends to be quite busy). The August test date gives you a little wiggle room to retake the SAT in October if needed and still get SAT scores in plenty of time for college applications. It also gives you the option of taking the SAT in August and SAT subject tests in October, since those must be taken on different test dates.The more difficult decision is whether a rising junior should take the August SAT. With good intentions, many parents want their student to get the SAT out of the way before junior year starts. For many students, junior year is the toughest year of high school with the most demands on their time, and it seems like a good idea to finish standardized testing before junior year gets into full swing. However, in our experience, the vast majority of students will get their best score on an SAT taken in the spring of their junior year (at the earliest). Theres nothing wrong with taking the August SAT as a rising junior, as long as youre open to retaking the test later in junior year.The August SAT may also be a good option for recruited athletes and other students who may need an SAT score earlier than normal.How much time can you devote to SAT prep this summer?Again, good intentions reig n. Staring down the barrel of a busy May and June, many students vow to throw their energy into SAT prep over the summer with an eye toward taking the August SAT. For many students, this plan will work well theyll be able to focus on preparing for the SAT over the summer with minimal distractions from school and sports.However, students should be brutally honest with themselves when deciding whether to take the August SAT. If you have a month-long vacation planned for July, an intense summer class, or a full-time summer job or if youre simply the kind of person who finds it hard to get motivated for SAT prep when you could be hanging out in Santa Cruz with your friends the August SAT may not be the best choice for you. Of course, you can always take the SAT in August with minimal prep over the summer, but just keep in mind that you may want to retake the test in October if you dont get the score youre looking for.How does SAT tutoring fit into your summer schedule?If you choose t o prepare for the SAT with an AJ tutor (and we hope you do!), you can expect to complete nine 1.5-hour sessions leading up to the August 26 test date. If you start tutoring after school is out, this generally means meeting about once per week throughout June, July and August. We also ask our SAT prep students to complete at least 3 full-length practice SATs, preferably proctored at our office on Saturday mornings. You can find our complete schedule of proctored practice SATs on our website.If youve already worked with us for SAT or ACT prep, we can usually shorten your prep for an SAT retake. Students will often complete four 1.5-hour sessions in preparation for retaking the SAT. You should also plan on taking 2 full-length practice SATs on the weekends. During the retake prep, your SAT tutor will focus more closely on your areas of difficulty from the last SAT and work on fine-tuning your approach to the test.In general, we think that the introduction of an August SAT date is a gre at move by the College Board to give students more options. 4 Reasons Class Size Matters Class size might seem like a trivial thing, but under the surface, there are many reasons why the size of a classroom matters. Statistics and research point toward the great benefits of having a small number of students in a learning environment. Here are just some of the reasons why a small classroom can foster greater learning: 1. Individualised attention With smaller class sizes, each student can receive the one-on-one attention they need. If a student has a question, he or she can easily get it answered. Students may also feel more comfortable asking for help if they don't feel overwhelmed by a large number of students in the classroom. It's great for a student to be able to raise his or her hand, ask a question, and have an answer explained until the student understands. With a larger classroom, teachers have to move on more rapidly, leaving some students in the dust. 2. Better test scores Research shows when students are in smaller classes they excel more with test scores. Again, as stated above, individualised attention helps students learn more and at a more comfortable pace. They are able to go over concepts again and again and get the practice they need before moving to the next topic. They feel more confident in their abilities to do well in testing and can go over test materials more in-depth with their teachers if need be. 3. A feeling of community In smaller classes, students are able to get to know their fellow students more closely creating a greater sense of care and community. This can also help reduce teasing and bullying. With a greater sense of community comes a greater need for everyone to stand up for each other and treat each other like family. 4. Better for teacher If the teacher is happy, everyone is happier. A teacher can get the point across and make sure he or she is being clear when class sizes are smaller. Teachers can be more effective and may even enjoy their jobs more with smaller class sizes. They are more likely to be relaxed and less stressed out in their jobs. Not to mention they are able to come to student's aid more readily, giving those students more one-on-one attention, especially to those who need it. Teachers can also get to know their students more intimately and cater to the students' learning style.
